M.U.S.I.C.

MUSIC is an acronym for Making Unwanted Situations Inspire Change. This program is for adolescents ages 13 to 17 who have a hard time expressing themselves. Most of their expression may be expressed through withdrawal, risky sexual behaviors, gang involvement, aggression or self-mutilation. MUSIC provides a safe space for at risk youth to find a sense of belonging. Participants will be given the space to create in the following areas: music, music production, musical engineering, songwriting, poetry writing, book writing, dance, photography, art, and the culinary arts. The program has a Summer division wherein our participants will create a final project, some will create and produce songs, others will publish books. During the school year the program will meet 2 times a week. One night for individual sessions and Friday nights will be open mic night (group sessions). The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention reports that sixty-two percent of violent crimes committed by juveniles occur on school days. Nearly one-fifth (18%) of juvenile violent crimes occur in the 4 hours between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. We want to provide a place to escape those temptations between those hours. MUSIC provides the participants with a consistent outlet and a constructive way to spend their evenings. All of our participants will have a place to belong.
